Description
[A 6-wheel drive vehicle designed for ultimate off-road capability]
The M561 Gama Goat, an amphibious transport vehicle with exceptional off-road capabilities, was officially adopted in 1966.
Its design features a four-wheel tractor section and a two-wheel trailer section connected by an articulated joint, allowing all six wheels to be driven.
Furthermore, the independent movement of the tractor and trailer sections, adapting to the terrain, provided extremely high maneuverability over various terrains.
Approximately 14,000 vehicles were produced by 1973 and deployed to a wide range of units within the US Army and Marine Corps.
Used not only for transportation but also for towing artillery, it was even used to transport rescued American medical students during the 1983 invasion of Grenada.
It remained in service until the early 1990s.
The nickname "Gama Goat" is said to be derived from the name of the developer of the articulated joint, R. Gammon, and its exceptional off-road mobility, comparable to that of a goat.
