Description
[The German-bred Celica Silhouette that challenged the ever-victorious rivals]
The Toyota Celica LB Turbo was a Group 5 racing machine developed for the 1977 German Racing Car Championship (DRM).
Based on the production-model Celica Liftback 2000GT, it featured aggressively flared over-fenders and a large rear wing, along with aerodynamic enhancements.
Most of the body panels were made of lightweight FRP, resulting in a vehicle weight of only 860 kg.
This radically modified body housed a Toyota-built, inline 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, tuned by Schnitzer, a tuner known for its work on BMWs.
The engine displacement was increased to 2090cc, equipped with 4 valves per cylinder, a mechanical fuel injection system, and a KKK turbocharger, producing a massive 560 horsepower.
Making its debut at the Hockenheim GP, round 8 of the 1977 DRM, it achieved its first victory by beating the ever-victorious Porsche 935 in a race held in Zolder, Belgium in October of that year.
As a Japanese-designed, German-developed silhouette racing car, it garnered significant attention.
