Description

The Yamato, the lead ship of the Yamato-class battleships, was the last battleship built by the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Its standard displacement of 64,000 tons far exceeded that of any other battleship in the world, and it boasted the world's largest and most powerful main armament: nine 46 cm guns in three triple turrets. It is remembered as the largest battleship in history.

Built under strict secrecy, it was completed in December 1941.

From February 1942 to 1943, it served as the flagship of the Combined Fleet, carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto as its commander.

It participated in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944.

Finally, in April 1945, while en route to Okinawa, it was sunk by American naval aircraft.

The Yamato never had the opportunity to demonstrate its full capabilities against US and British battleships.

However, the innovative shipbuilding technologies developed during its construction laid the foundation for Japan's postwar resurgence as a leading shipbuilding nation.
