Description
[A Fighter-Bomber that Played a Key Role in Carrier Operations]
During the latter stages of World War II, the US Navy's Corsair aircraft, with its high speed and heavy armament, dominated the Japanese forces.
Among these, the F4U-1D, officially adopted as a carrier-based aircraft in April 1944, was a particularly significant model.
It featured a frameless semi-bubble canopy, a propeller with a wider blade base, and a raised cockpit for improved visibility.
In addition to six 12.7 mm machine guns mounted in the wings, it could carry up to 2,000 pounds of ordnance or fuel tanks on two pylons under the inner wings, and eight rockets on the outer wings.
In February 1945, it became the first US carrier-based aircraft to conduct bombing raids on mainland Japan, playing a vital role in carrier operations.
