Description
[The German-born Gr.5 Celica that defeated the ever-victorious Porsche]
The Toyota Celica LB Turbo was a Group 5 machine developed for the 1977 German Racing Car Championship (DRM).
Based on the commercially available Celica Liftback 2000GT, it was fitted with aerodynamic parts such as large, flared overfenders and a rear wing, and the body panels other than the bonnet, roof, doors, and rear panel were changed to lightweight FRP.
The vehicle weight was kept down to 860 kg.
The engine is a Toyota-made inline 4-cylinder (18R-G) with a displacement of 1968 cc, tuned by Schnitzer, a company known for tuning BMWs and other cars.
The displacement was increased to 2090cc, it was made 4-valve, and further equipped with a mechanical fuel injection system and a KKK turbocharger, producing a powerful 560 horsepower.
Debuting at the 1977 DRM Round 8 Hockenheim GP, it achieved a remarkable first victory in the ADAC Trophy race held in Zolder, Belgium in October of that year, defeating the ever-victorious Porsche 935.
As a silhouette machine born in Japan and raised in Germany, it attracted considerable attention.
