Description

[The 1976 Champion Machine That Made a Comeback]

In 1976, the World Championship title was awarded to Group 5 cars, and the Porsche 935 was developed to accommodate this.

While Group 5 cars were allowed to be heavily modified, regulations stipulated that the silhouette (basic external shape) of the production car be retained, leading to the car being nicknamed the Silhouette Formula.

It was based on the Porsche 930 Turbo, a production car released in 1974.

The rear-mounted engine was an air-cooled, horizontally opposed, six-cylinder engine, scaled down from the production car's 2992cc to 2857cc.

By increasing the turbocharger's boost pressure and highly tuned each component, it developed a high power output of 590 horsepower.

Furthermore, the suspension was modified, and the body was significantly lighter. The car won its debut race at the Mugello 6 Hours in March 1976, and then won the second race at Vallelunga.

However, its air-cooled intercooler was found to be in violation of regulations, forcing it to be converted to a water-cooled system.

As a result, Porsche experienced consecutive problems in the third, fourth, and fifth races, losing the victory to BMW, but managed to win the remaining two, bringing Porsche the championship crown in a comeback.
