[The "Tank of the Sky" that Pushed Back the German Army]

The Ilyushin IL-2 Shturmovik was the Soviet Army's signature ground attack aircraft during World War II.

It was the aircraft the Soviet military needed most when the German-Soviet War broke out in June 1941.

Premier Stalin himself encouraged production, and by the end of the war, more than 36,000 units were mass-produced, the most in military aircraft history.

A key feature of the Ilyushin IL-2 was the bulletproof steel covering the cockpit, engine, and fuel tanks, which also served as the aircraft's structural material to maintain bulletproof capabilities and reduce weight.

Production of the single-seat version began in March 1941, but a two-seat version was introduced with an additional swiveling machine gun mounted at the rear to counter German interceptions.

An improved version was released in late 1943, with the outer wing's sweep angle increased from 5 degrees to 15 degrees.

It delivered devastating blows to German tank units from low altitudes, and together with the T34 tank, sealed the Soviet victory.
