Description

[About the M26 Armored Tank Recovery Vehicle]

During World War II, the M26 Armored Tank Recovery Vehicle continued to recover and tow tanks damaged or broken down in battle, supporting the advance and victory of U.S. tank units behind the scenes.

Based on a Knuckey Truck 6 x 6 tractor, the M26 was mass-produced in April 1943 by railroad car manufacturer Pacific Car and Foundry.

Equipped with an armored cabin, a 240-horsepower Hall-Scott 440 engine, a tandem winch, and A-arms for recovery operations, it was combined with an M15 semi-trailer to form the M25 Tank Transporter Dragon Wagon, but could also be used on its own to recover and tow disabled tanks.

It could also be equipped with welding machines and other equipment for emergency repairs on tanks on the front lines.

The M26 continued to be used in European countries after World War II, and 20 were provided to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
