Description

[An ambitious work marking the dawn of Toyota Motor Corporation]

The AB Phaeton is an open-top model of the Toyoda AA, Toyota Motor Corporation's first mass-produced passenger car, announced in 1936.

Its key mechanisms, such as a 3.4-liter inline-six engine and rigid leaf springs on the front and rear suspension, are based on the AA.

Other changes included a folding top, a specially designed retractable front window, rear doors that opened backwards rather than the AA's traditional double doors, and rear seats positioned further back than the AA to accommodate folding auxiliary seats.

Of the 353 AB Phaetons produced by 1938, the majority were used by military commanders, with very few sold to the general public.
