Group 5 racing, a highly popular sport in the 1970s and 1980s, featured cars based on production cars, modified to sport impressive bodies and powerful engines.

The Ford Zakspeed Capri Turbo was a racing car developed by the West German racing team Zakspeed for the DRM (Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft) in 1978.

The extremely low and wide body was the result of extensive wind tunnel testing.

Its engine was a 1427 cc inline-four Ford-Cosworth BDA.

Equipped with a KKK turbocharger, it boasted a maximum output of 375 horsepower.

Another notable feature was its weight of just 790 kg, thanks to the fact that most of the body panels were made of FRP.

The Zakspeed Capri made its debut at Hockenheim in the summer of 1978, and won its first sprint race at the Nürburgring in October.

The following year, it took second place in the opening round of the DRM and first place in the second round, spectacularly proving its superior capabilities.
